Celebrating Independence Day in Albuquerque

by Sandi Pressley

Albuquerque, New Mexico, is known for its vibrant culture, stunning landscapes, and a rich tapestry of history and tradition. As the 4th of July approaches, the city prepares to celebrate Independence Day with a variety of events that promise fun, entertainment, and a sense of community. Here's what you can expect from the 4th of July celebrations in Albuquerque for the year 2024.

Freedom 4th at Balloon Fiesta Park

The main attraction of Albuquerque's 4th of July celebration is the Freedom 4th event at Balloon Fiesta Park. This family-friendly event is free to the public and features a concert with local bands and national headliner Michael Ray, known for his Platinum-certified hits and dynamic performances. The gates open at 3 p.m., and attendees can enjoy a variety of food from local vendors, kids' activities including inflatable jumpers and face painting, and of course, the brightest fireworks show in the state to cap off the night.

Old Town Events

The historic heart of Albuquerque, Old Town, offers a more traditional celebration with live music and dance performances. The New Mexico BioPark Society also provides an opportunity for unlimited visits to the ABQ BioPark Zoo, Aquarium, and Botanic Garden with a membership, which could be a great way to spend the day before enjoying the evening festivities.

New Mexico United Soccer Match

Kick off your 4th of July weekend with some thrilling soccer action. New Mexico United will be hosting a special match to celebrate Independence Day. Gather your friends and family, don your team colors, and head to Rio Grande Credit Union Field at Isotopes Park for an unforgettable experience.

Zoo Music and Summer Nights Concert Series

Music lovers can rejoice as the ABQ BioPark Zoo, Aquarium, and Botanic Garden will host the Zoo Music and Summer Nights concert series. With a BioPark Society Membership, you can enjoy half-price tickets to these enchanting evenings filled with music under the stars.

Isleta Amphitheater Freedom Celebration 2024

For a more grandiose celebration, the Isleta Amphitheater will host the Freedom Celebration 2024. This event promises to be a spectacular display of patriotism with live performances and a fireworks show that will light up the night sky.

Planning Your Visit

If you're planning to attend any of the 4th of July events in Albuquerque, it's recommended to check the latest information regarding parking, transportation, and event schedules. With the state of New Mexico experiencing extreme fire danger in the summer, it's also crucial to stay updated on any changes to events, especially those involving fireworks.

Freedom 4th Celebration

Headlined by The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, this annual free event will take place on Thursday, July 4, 2019, from 3 to 10 p.m. The event also features a beer garden with local microbrews, free children's activities, a food court, and several other performances culminating in the largest fireworks display in the state.

Music and Fireworks in Los Lunas

Starting with a parade at 9am at Lambros Loop to Don Pasqual Road. Then at 4pm enjoy the festivities at Daniel Fernandez Memorial Park. Free live entertainment from Nathaniel Krantz Band, Nosotros, The Gershom Brothers, The Black Pearl Band of NM, food (you can bring a picnic but no ice chests), and activities for the whole family. The fireworks display starts at dusk.

Isotopes Baseball and Fireworks

Take the whole family to enjoy an all-American game of baseball followed by a fireworks display to celebrate Independence Day.  Gates open at 5:00 p.m. and the game starts at 6:35 p.m. with the minor league Isotopes playing the Las Vegas Aviators.

Pork and Brew BBQ Cook-Off

From July 5–7, 2019, the Annual Pork and Brew will return to the Santa Ana Star Center about 30 minutes north of Albuquerque. Over 50 competitors will gather from around the United States to cook-off for the chance to go to the national BBQ competition held in Kansas City each year.

Rio Rancho Fireworks

20 minutes north of Albuquerque, the city of Rio Rancho puts on this fireworks display for the 4th. It's a great alternative if you live on the west side of Albuquerque if you want to avoid the crowds of the Freedom Fourth event.
