How to Reduce the Cost of Flooring in Your Albuquerqeu Home

by Sandi Pressley

When it comes to the aesthetics and value of your Albuquerque home, flooring is a major investment. The price of flooring is usually dictated by the quality, but there are ways for you to reduce the cost. It is always a good idea to look for techniques that may help you save money when it comes to hardwood floors, and if you know just what to do, you will end up saving a large amount.

The best approach is to get a few estimates and to set a timeline you are comfortable with. Choose the contractor who offers the best price, not the lowest one. Instead, choose someone you feel comfortable working with and who will complete the project on time. You can reduce the price of hardwood floors by following these tips.

Remove the carpet and move the furniture

You have to be willing to get your hands dirty when you want to cut costs. You only need grit and strength. You do not need any special skills. You can rip out the carpet yourself and move the furniture yourself if you have the time and energy to do so. Don't forget to remove all the staples. Be aware that it will take longer than you think, especially if the stairs are covered in carpet.

Pick a different type of wood

Many times, small trade-offs can help you save a lot of money. Just by downgrading the type of wood, you can save a great deal of money. Wood can stay the same hardness and shade, but lower grades can be cheaper and have more color variations. To avoid worrying about staining the floor, pick a dark color. Don't trade quality down for the sake of price, but just downgrade one level and you'll have a lot of options.

Install the wood yourself

Although this requires more effort than most people are willing to put forth, it is worth considering if you are looking to cut costs. It may not be a good option for everyone, but if you enjoy doing it yourself, you may be able to accomplish it. If you have hardwood floors, do not attempt to sand and refinish them yourself as they may not turn out well and may cost you a lot of money if you eventually have to hire a professional.

Buy materials yourself

You can save money if you buy the materials yourself or online, but be careful. Make sure you understand what you are buying. If you buy low-quality wood, you may regret your decision in the long run. Buying the product from another source may mean you won't have access to the top installers.

This situation will require you to negotiate with the contractor or installer. To make sure you have the right quantities of moldings, you will also need to order matching moldings and rent a big delivery truck to bring the wood to your house. Buying materials yourself is only an option if you are familiar with them and have the skills to do so. Otherwise, you could end up spending much more than you planned.

Reduce the amount of work

Reducing the scope of work is the best way to reduce flooring costs. Budget-conscious individuals can always plan work at a later date. This is a smart way to control costs while sticking to quality materials. You will be able to handle a project better if you break it up into parts.

By breaking up the tasks over time, you can go about things efficiently. Additionally, you can get estimates for different types of wood and the area of flooring that will be installed. It is possible to eliminate the rooms that are not used very often or do them later.

You can reduce the cost of your home's flooring by following these tips. Speak to a contractor to see what can be done. It is not necessary to do every single step yourself, simply buying the material or waiting for a sale can also greatly reduce the overall cost. Make sure you set a budget for your flooring project and ask the contractor what you can do within the budget.

Albuquerque homeowners are increasingly looking towards hybrid solar inverters as a versatile and efficient solution for their solar energy needs. A hybrid solar inverter is a multifaceted device that combines the functions of a traditional grid-tied solar inverter with a battery inverter, offering a range of operational modes to suit different energy requirements and scenarios.

Understanding Hybrid Solar Inverters

Before we examine the advantages, let's clarify what a hybrid solar inverter is. This innovative device acts as a bridge between your solar panels, battery storage, and the electrical grid. Unlike standard inverters, hybrid inverters allow for energy storage in batteries, which can be used when solar production is low, ensuring a constant energy supply.

Advantages of Hybrid Solar Inverters

1. Maximizing Solar Utilization

Hybrid solar inverters enable homeowners to make the most out of their solar panels. During peak sunlight hours, when the panels produce more electricity than the home can use, the excess energy is stored in batteries rather than being sent back to the grid. This stored energy can then be used during the night or on cloudy days, maximizing the use of solar energy and reducing dependence on the grid.

2. Enhanced Energy Security

With a hybrid solar inverter, your home can maintain power even during outages. This is particularly beneficial in areas where power outages are common due to extreme weather or grid maintenance. Energy security is a significant concern for many, and hybrid inverters offer a reliable solution.

3. Financial Benefits

The financial incentives of using a hybrid solar inverter are multi-fold. Firstly, by utilizing stored solar energy, you can significantly reduce your electricity bills. Secondly, many states offer tax credits and rebates for solar energy systems, which can offset the initial installation costs. Lastly, if your system produces more energy than you need, you can sell the surplus back to the grid through net metering programs, creating an additional income stream.

4. Supporting the Local Economy

Investing in a hybrid solar inverter system also supports the local economy. The solar industry creates jobs for installers, manufacturers, and maintenance technicians. By choosing a hybrid system, you're contributing to the growth of green jobs in the Albuquerque area.

5. Reducing Carbon Footprint

Albuquerque's commitment to sustainability can be furthered through the adoption of hybrid solar inverters. By relying more on solar energy and less on fossil fuels, you can significantly reduce your household's carbon emissions, contributing to a healthier environment.

Tailoring to Albuquerque's Climate

Albuquerque's unique climate presents an ideal opportunity for solar energy systems. The city enjoys more than 280 sunny days per year, providing ample sunlight to power homes efficiently. Hybrid solar inverters are particularly well-suited to this environment, as they can store excess energy for use during less sunny periods.

Long-Term Investment

While the upfront cost of a hybrid solar inverter may be higher than traditional systems, it's a long-term investment that pays off. The durability and efficiency of these systems mean they can provide energy for decades, with minimal maintenance costs.

For Albuquerque homeowners, the decision to install a hybrid solar inverter is a wise one. The benefits are clear: from financial savings to increased energy independence and environmental sustainability. As the world moves towards renewable energy sources, Albuquerque residents have the opportunity to lead the way, harnessing the power of the sun to create a brighter, cleaner future for generations to come.

What to Know About Selling a Home to a Family Member

by Sandi Pressley

Selling a home in Albuquerque to a family member can be a complex process, but it's also an opportunity to ensure that a cherished family home stays within the family. This extended guide will delve deeper into the intricacies of such a transaction, offering a thorough understanding of the steps, considerations, and best practices to follow.

Comprehensive Legal Framework

When selling a property to a relative, it's imperative to approach the transaction with the same level of formality as you would with an unrelated buyer. This means engaging in a comprehensive legal process, including drafting a formal sales agreement. It's advisable to involve a real estate attorney who can provide legal advice tailored to your specific situation and help navigate any state-specific regulations.

Fair Market Value and Appraisals

Determining the fair market value (FMV) of the property is a critical step. An independent appraisal will provide an objective valuation, which is essential for several reasons:
- It helps set a fair sale price.
- It ensures that all parties understand the value of the property.
- It is necessary for tax purposes, particularly if the sale price differs from the FMV.

Tax Considerations

Tax implications are a major aspect of selling a home to a family member. If the sale price is less than the FMV, the difference may be considered a gift for tax purposes. The IRS allows an annual gift tax exclusion amount (which is subject to change, so consult the latest tax code), and amounts above this may require filing a gift tax return. It's also important to consider the potential for future capital gains taxes for the buyer, especially if they eventually sell the property.

Mortgage and Financing

If the family member intends to finance the purchase through a mortgage, they'll need to qualify for the loan based on their creditworthiness. As a seller, you may consider offering seller financing as an alternative, which can simplify the process and potentially offer tax benefits. However, this option also carries risks and should be discussed with a financial advisor.

Professional Assistance

While it may be tempting to handle the sale without professional help to save on costs, enlisting the services of real estate professionals can be invaluable. A real estate agent experienced in family transactions can provide guidance and help avoid common pitfalls. Additionally, a tax professional can offer advice on how to structure the sale to minimize tax liabilities for both parties.

Emotional Dynamics

Selling a home within the family can be emotionally charged. It's important to maintain clear communication and manage expectations from the start. Consider involving the entire family in discussions to ensure that everyone is on the same page and to prevent misunderstandings that could lead to disputes.

Long-Term Considerations

Think about the long-term implications of the sale for your family. How will it affect family dynamics? Will it impact future estate planning? These are important questions to ponder and discuss with your family and advisors.

Selling a home in Albuquerque to a family member is more than just a transaction; it's a family affair that requires careful planning and consideration. By understanding the full scope of the process and seeking the right professional advice, you can navigate this journey successfully, ensuring that the home continues to be a source of joy and memories for the family.

Signs Your Pipes Need Upgrading

by Sandi Pressley

Owning a home in Albuquerque comes with its fair share of maintenance tasks, and keeping an eye on the condition of your plumbing system is crucial. The pipes in your home are the unsung heroes of your daily comfort, quietly working away behind the scenes. But when they start to fail, they can cause a world of trouble. Here's a rundown of the telltale signs that your pipes may need an upgrade.

Age of Pipes: Just like fine wine, your house has a vintage, and if it's over 50 years old, it's likely that your pipes are too. Older pipes made from materials like galvanized steel are prone to corrosion and rust, which can lead to a host of problems.

Regular Leaks: A leak here and there might not seem like a big deal, but frequent leaks are a red flag. They can be indicative of a larger issue, such as deteriorating pipes that need replacing rather than another round of repairs.

Low Water Pressure: If your showers are more of a trickle than a torrent, it could be due to mineral buildup or corrosion in your pipes, restricting water flow and reducing pressure.

Discolored Water: Rusty or brown-tinted water is a clear sign of corrosion in your pipes. Not only is this unappealing, but it can also pose health risks if the water is used for drinking or cooking.

Lead Pipes: If your home was built before the 1980s, there's a chance you have lead pipes. Lead is a serious health hazard, and upgrading to modern materials is not just beneficial, it's essential.

Regular Clogs: Constant clogs, even after clearing them, suggest that your pipes may be the culprit. Corrosion and mineral buildup can narrow the pipes, leading to frequent blockages.

Why Upgrading is Necessary

Upgrading your home's pipes isn't just about fixing current problems; it's about preventing future ones. Here are a few reasons why investing in new pipes is a smart move:

  • Improved Water Quality: New pipes mean cleaner water, free from the contaminants that old, corroded pipes might introduce.
  • Enhanced Durability: Modern pipes are designed to last, using materials that resist corrosion and wear.
  • Better Water Pressure: Enjoy showers and faucets that work at full blast, thanks to improved water flow with new pipes.
  • Preventing Water Damage: Old, leaky pipes can cause significant damage to your home. Upgrading can save you from costly repairs down the line.

If you're noticing any of these signs, it might be time to call in a professional to assess your plumbing system. Upgrading your pipes can seem like a daunting task, but the peace of mind and long-term savings it brings can be well worth the investment. Keep your Albuquerque home's plumbing in top shape, and you'll ensure that your sanctuary remains a place of comfort and reliability. Remember, your pipes might be out of sight, but they should never be out of mind!

Maximizing Your Albuquerque Home Value Through Paint

by Sandi Pressley

When it comes to selling your home in Albuquerque, every detail counts, and the colors you choose to adorn your walls can play a surprisingly significant role in appealing to potential buyers. The psychology of color is a powerful tool in creating an environment that not only resonates with buyers on an aesthetic level but also evokes the right emotions and feelings that could lead to a sale.

Understanding the Market's Palette Preferences

In recent years, there has been a notable shift in the market's palette preferences. Where once the pristine simplicity of white walls was the go-to, we now see a trend towards more nuanced and sophisticated choices. A Zillow survey highlighted this change, revealing that homes featuring dark gray kitchens sold for approximately $2,512 more than expected. This color, often associated with modernity and elegance, seems to strike the right chord with contemporary buyers.

Living rooms painted in similar dark gray tones have also seen a positive impact on sale prices, with potential increases of around $1,755. This suggests that buyers are looking for a home that makes a statement, a space that stands out with a sense of character and depth.

Exterior Colors: The First Impression

The exterior of your home is the first thing a buyer sees, and as such, it's crucial to make a strong first impression. The 'greige' family of colors—a blend of gray and beige—has emerged as a popular choice for its ability to balance warm and cool tones, providing a welcoming yet stylish appearance. A color like Kelly Moore’s ‘KM4907 Gallery Gray’ is often recommended by experts for its versatility and broad appeal.

In 2024, the trend leans towards neutral but bold colors that enhance curb appeal and complement the architectural style of the home. A classic gray such as Chelsea Gray is a top pick for homes with cedar shingle siding or craftsman exteriors, harmonizing with both historic and modern aesthetics.

Interior Harmony: Creating a Cohesive Look

For the interior, a cohesive look is key. Designers advocate for a palette of neutral colors and earthy tones that can seamlessly flow from room to room. Warm beiges, light grays, and off-whites with a hint of yellow create a serene and inviting atmosphere. In the kitchen, a splash of light blue or gray can refresh the space, while bedrooms and bathrooms benefit from the tranquility of neutral blues or greens.

The ultimate goal is to present a home that feels both welcoming and contemporary. The right paint color can transform a space, making it easier for buyers to envision themselves living there. It's about striking a balance between a home that feels lived in and one that offers a blank canvas for new memories.

For those seeking to maximize their Albuquerque home's potential on the market, it's worth considering the impact of paint colors. By choosing wisely, you can not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of your home but also potentially increase its value.

Creating a Luxurious Albuquerque Home on a Budget

by Sandi Pressley

Transforming your Albuquerque home into a luxurious sanctuary doesn't have to drain your bank account. With a few strategic choices and some creativity, you can elevate your living space's elegance without spending a fortune. Here are some expert tips to help you achieve that high-end look for less.

1. Paint Wisely: A fresh coat of paint can do wonders. Opt for neutral shades that provide a timeless and sophisticated backdrop for your decor. Warm whites for walls and crisp whites for trims can create a clean and inviting atmosphere.

2. Texture Play: Mixing textures can add depth and interest to your home. Combine smooth leather furniture with fluffy cushions, or pair a wooden coffee table with a metallic vase to create a dynamic look.

3. Statement Rugs: A large, well-placed rug can anchor a room and make it appear larger. Choose a design that complements your color scheme and adds a touch of luxury.

4. Smart Storage: Clutter is the enemy of luxury. Use stylish baskets and decorative bowls to hide everyday items and maintain a neat and orderly appearance.

5. Pillow Talk: Overstuffed throw pillows exude comfort and opulence. Use larger inserts than the pillow covers to achieve that plush, inviting look.

6. Elevate Your Curtains: Hanging curtains closer to the ceiling can give the illusion of height and grandeur. Opt for long, flowing drapes to enhance the elegance.

7. Update Lighting: Swapping out dated light fixtures for modern ones can instantly uplift a space. Consider pendant lights or chic lamps to add character and warmth.

8. Accessorize Wisely: Less is more when it comes to accessories. Choose a few impactful pieces, like a statement vase or a bold piece of art, to draw the eye and create focal points.

9. Furniture Proportions: Select furniture that fits the scale of your room. Avoid pieces that are too large or too small, as they can disrupt the harmony of the space.

10. DIY Elegance: Simple DIY projects, like adding molding or a tile backsplash, can give your home a custom, luxurious feel without the custom price tag.

11. Greenery and Florals: Incorporate plants and fresh flowers to breathe life into your rooms. They add color, texture, and a sense of luxury.

12. Scent-sational Atmosphere: A luxurious home isn't just about looks; it's also about ambiance. Use scented candles or diffusers to create a pleasant and inviting scent throughout your home.

Remember, creating a luxurious home is about making thoughtful decisions that reflect your personal style and attention to detail. With these tips, you can enjoy the luxury you deserve, all while staying within your budget. Happy decorating!

Color is a powerful tool that can affect our mood, energy and well-being. Different colors can evoke different emotions and feelings, such as happiness, calmness, excitement or sadness. In this blog post, we will explore how to use color to boost emotion and well-being in your Albuquerque home.

First, let's look at some general guidelines for choosing colors for your home. According to color psychology, warm colors such as red, orange and yellow are stimulating and energizing, while cool colors such as blue, green and purple are soothing and relaxing. However, this does not mean that you should paint your entire home in one color scheme. Instead, you should consider the function and purpose of each room and choose colors that match the desired mood and atmosphere.

For example, if you want to create a cozy and inviting living room, you might opt for warm colors such as beige, brown or burgundy. These colors can make the space feel more comfortable and welcoming, as well as stimulate conversation and social interaction. On the other hand, if you want to create a serene and peaceful bedroom, you might choose cool colors such as lavender, blue or gray. These colors can help you relax and unwind, as well as promote restful sleep and reduce stress.

Another factor to consider when choosing colors for your home is the amount of natural light that enters the space. Natural light can enhance or diminish the effect of colors, depending on the time of day and the direction of the windows. For example, if your room faces east or west, it will receive more sunlight in the morning or evening, respectively. This means that warm colors will appear brighter and more vibrant, while cool colors will appear duller and darker. Conversely, if your room faces north or south, it will receive more consistent light throughout the day. This means that warm colors will appear softer and more muted, while cool colors will appear clearer and more vivid.

Therefore, you should choose colors that complement the natural light in your room, rather than clash with it. For example, if your room receives a lot of sunlight in the morning, you might want to avoid bright yellow or orange walls, as they might be too overwhelming and intense. Instead, you might opt for a softer shade of yellow or peach, or a neutral color such as white or cream. Similarly, if your room receives little natural light, you might want to avoid dark blue or purple walls, as they might make the space feel cold and gloomy. Instead, you might choose a lighter shade of blue or lavender, or a warm color such as pink or coral.

Finally, you should also consider your personal preferences and tastes when choosing colors for your home. After all, you are the one who will live in it and enjoy it every day. Therefore, you should choose colors that make you happy and reflect your personality and style. You can also experiment with different combinations of colors and see how they affect your mood and well-being. You can use color swatches, paint samples or online tools to visualize how different colors would look in your home.

Color is a wonderful way to express yourself and create a beautiful and comfortable environment in your home. By following these tips on how to use color to boost emotion and well-being in your Albuquerque home, you can transform your space into a place that inspires you and makes you feel good.

How to Save Money on Kitchen Cabinets

by Sandi Pressley

When remodeling your kitchen in Albuquerque, the new cabinetry will likely be one of the most costly expenses.

Kitchen cabinets represent a significant part of a renovation, typically making up around 40% of the total budget. Two major factors influencing the cost of cabinets are their quality and construction.

Though cabinets are a long-term investment, how can you still save money when purchasing these essential fixtures?

Do Your Research

The first step to saving money on kitchen cabinets is to do your research and determine which features and construction elements are essential versus those you can live without.

For example, start by learning about the materials used to make cabinets. Particleboard is inexpensive but fragile, and does not hold up well to moisture, while more durable options like plywood may cost more upfront but last longer.

Medium-density fiberboard is often preferred because it strikes a balance between cost and performance. Compared to solid wood, it actually performs better. Medium-density fiberboard is very water-resistant and can easily withstand changes in humidity and temperature.

Though solid wood cabinets are beautiful, their high cost and sensitivity to environmental conditions make them impractical for some kitchens. For instance, fluctuations in temperature and moisture can ruin solid wood cabinets if not properly regulated.

Get Custom Doors and Pre-Made Boxes

Custom cabinet doors and inexpensive premade cabinet boxes offer a creative solution to get the high-end look of custom cabinets on a budget. By pairing custom doors with affordable cabinet boxes from IKEA or Home Depot, you can achieve the outward appearance of high-end custom cabinets for a fraction of the cost.

Premade cabinet doors can also be dressed up with unique hardware to feel more custom without the price tag. This flexible approach allows you to customize your cabinet look according to your style and budget.

Factory-made cabinets and less expensive pre-made options usually have built-in rails and are constructed from either particleboard with a veneer or medium-density fiberboard. When selecting cabinets, limit unnecessary extras like spice racks and pullouts, as too many custom additions or in-stock options with accessories can increase costs.

Get Unfinished Cabinets

If you choose unfinished cabinets, you will save money upfront, but you will still need to paint or stain them yourself later. Staining may be a DIY project, but painting likely requires hiring a professional. Calculate the cost of finishing to determine if the upfront savings are worth the extra work.

Use Open Shelving

If you want new cabinets but have a limited budget, consider open shelving instead of upper cabinets. This trendy look can save thousands of dollars yet still appears stylish and clean. Going without upper cabinets allows you to splurge on other kitchen upgrades while sticking to your budget.

Open shelving is not only more affordable but also keeps your kitchen feeling brighter and more spacious. This open design is especially effective in smaller, enclosed kitchens where too many upper cabinets can create a cramped ambiance.

Making Your Albuquerque Home Ready for Pets

by Sandi Pressley

Bringing a pet into your Albuquerque home is a big decision that requires thoughtful preparation. While pets can bring great joy, they may damage carpets, furniture, and upholstery during training. However, with some knowledge and planning, you can welcome a pet while keeping your home intact. Invest in this new family member by learning how to balance their needs and your belongings.

House training

The most critical way to protect your home is by properly training your pet. While time-consuming, training is vital for household harmony. If you lack the time, consider hiring a professional trainer. Housebreak pets early to prevent carpet stains. Accidents happen, but pet carpet cleaners can quickly remove stains and odors.

Pets that are happy and content are also less inclined to eliminate where they shouldn't. If your pet is normally well-behaved but has begun soiling areas inside the home or outside the litter box, this change in behavior may indicate stress or illness. Examine if there have been any alterations to your pet's routine or other symptoms of poor health. Consulting a veterinarian can help address abnormal behaviors like inappropriate elimination.

Cat scratch fever

When adopting a cat, it's important to understand their natural instinct to scratch surfaces in order to maintain their claws. While some cats are declawed to prevent damage, many animal welfare groups consider this practice inhumane. The most humane and effective approach is providing scratching posts, mats, or other approved surfaces that allow cats to satisfy their scratching needs. Observing your new cat's preferences will allow you to provide the scratching tools they like best, protecting your home furnishings while keeping your cat healthy and content.

To stop your cat from scratching furniture, reward them when they scratch appropriate surfaces. Scolding after the fact is ineffective, so monitor your cat closely until they reliably scratch only where allowed. Cats prefer rough, challenging surfaces that keep their claws healthy, not soft ones they can easily shred.

Dog destruction

Just like cats need to scratch, many dogs have a strong instinct to chew, dig, or otherwise destroy things. Keep your dog satisfied and your home (and shoes!) undamaged by always having plenty of dog toys available. Many chew toys are built to withstand serious chewing and will last a while. Be sure to replace them as your dog ruins them, or your dog may start chewing on other objects instead.

Another very effective way to protect your home is to keep your dog well-exercised. Depending on the breed, some dogs, particularly those with high energy levels or high intelligence, need mental and physical stimulation to prevent destructive behavior. Regularly exercise your dog as much as possible. With luck, a tired, content dog will have less desire to release pent-up energy on your home. Importantly, research breed traits before adopting. If you have limited time for exercise, consider breeds compatible with your lifestyle. Some dogs need more activity or space and may act out if their needs aren't met. Know your dog's requirements to ensure a happy home for both of you.

Appliance Repairs You Can Do Yourself (and Those You Shouldn't)

by Sandi Pressley

Appliances play an essential role in our daily lives. When they break down, it can cause major disruption and expense. While professional repairs are often costly and time-consuming to schedule, many common appliance issues can be fixed by homeowners themselves in just minutes. With a bit of knowledge and elbow grease, Albuquerque homeowners can perform simple repairs on five common problems. More complex issues should be left to appliance repair experts.

Replace the Thermostat in The Dryer

If your dryer fails to heat up, the thermostat is likely faulty since these commonly malfunction. Replacing the thermostat yourself with a new one purchased for under $80 at a hardware store will save substantially on repairs, typically around $180. Consult your dryer manual to find the thermostat and buy the right replacement model.

Clear the Drain in the Dishwasher

If your dishwasher is no longer draining, the drain is likely clogged. You can unclog it yourself in minutes using a shop vac. Simply disconnect the drain hose and insert the shop vac's hose into the drain opening. Run the shop vac for a few minutes to clear the clog, then reconnect the drain and try the dishwasher again. This quick fix can save you the cost and hassle of a professional repair.

Replace the Fan in the Freezer

If the freezer is not staying cold, the likely cause is a faulty freezer fan. The fan circulates cold air throughout the freezer, so if it fails, the cold air cannot reach all areas. Replacing the fan is an easy fix - a new one costs around $85 at your local hardware store. With just a screwdriver, you can replace the fan in minutes. Simply remove the cover, unscrew and disconnect the old fan, then install the new one.

Clean Coils in the Refrigerator

If the fridge is not staying as cool as it should, it’s probably because the coils are dirty. These are located under or behind the fridge, and are a collection place for a lot of debris, dust, and pet hair. When the dirt builds up, the coils end up freezing, rather than cooling what’s inside. To clean them, just unplug the fridge, slide it out and go around the back to where you can see the coils. You can use a vacuum, a duster, or a cloth and get them clean. Then just put your fridge back in place, plug it back in, and give it an hour to get back down to its normal temperature.

Unclog the Burner in the Gas Stove

If your gas stove won't light or emit a gas smell, don't panic. This minor issue is often an easy fix. First check that the electricity and gas supply are working. If they're fine, the burner is likely clogged. Shut off the gas, then scrub the burner head thoroughly with a small brush and cleanser to remove any debris. Once cleaned, turn the gas back on and ignite the burner. The stove should now light properly.

When to Call a Pro

Though you can make some repairs yourself without issue, certain fixes require calling in professional help.

Repair the Icemaker Broken on the Fridge

If your icemaker suddenly stops working but is still connected to the water supply, the issue is likely a faulty compressor, which can cost up to $300 to repair depending on the brand. Since replacing the compressor involves extensive work on the refrigerator itself, it's best to call a professional repair technician to properly diagnose and fix the issue. Attempting compressor repairs without expertise risks further damage and the possible need for a full refrigerator replacement, so don't try to DIY this repair.

Repair the Microwave

Microwaves are complex appliances that can be dangerous to repair yourself, so it's best to call a professional for any issue, no matter how minor it may seem. Attempting a DIY fix risks radiation leaks or other hazards, whereas experts have the knowledge and tools to safely diagnose and resolve any problem.

Take Care of Your Appliances

With simple fixes, you can often avoid costly repairs. Know when a do-it-yourself approach will suffice and when you need a professional to keep things running smoothly.
