The Albuquerque Isotopes are home for a full four-game series against the Las Vegas Aviators, running Thursday through Sunday at Rio Grande Credit Union Field at Isotopes Park. Friday, August 21, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., AMP Concerts presents Los Texmaniacs with Lisa Morales at the KiMo Theatre downtown. The KiMo itself is worth the trip regardless of who's on stage — it's a 1927 Pueblo Deco landmark on Route 66 that's been restored and kept running as a working venue rather than turned into a museum piece. Los Texmaniacs are a Grammy-winning conjunto and Tejano outfit, and a Friday night show here is a solid pairing of a great local venue with music that reflects the borderland traditions that run through so much of New Mexico's culture. The building's terraced towers and hand-painted ceiling murals alone make it worth arriving a few minutes early, before the lights go down.
Close Out the Weekend with a Route 66 History Talk
Sunday, August 23, from 2 to 3 p.m., the Albuquerque Museum runs a Route 66 Lecture Series session titled 'Photographing the Other Route 66,' included with regular museum admission. Route 66 runs directly through Albuquerque along Central Avenue, and this ties in well with a museum visit or a drive down Central itself, past the motel signs, diners, and neon that made the corridor famous long before interstate highways rerouted most of the country's road trips elsewhere.
Getting Around: Parking, Timing, and the August Weather Factor
Old Town and downtown are close enough together that you can reasonably do both in one evening — the drive between the KiMo Theatre and the Albuquerque Museum runs about ten minutes depending on traffic. Old Town has its own free public lots off Mountain Road and Romero Street, and they fill up fast on Saturdays once the music starts, so arriving by 12:30 gives you a better shot at a close spot than rolling in right at 1. Isotopes Park has its own lot right off Avenida Cesar Chavez, and gates typically open well ahead of first pitch, which is worth knowing if you want time to grab food inside before the game gets going.
Late August in Albuquerque sits squarely in monsoon season, which means afternoons can turn from clear to a fast-moving thunderstorm and back again within an hour. Mornings and early afternoons tend to be dry and hot, evenings cool off quickly once the sun drops, and outdoor plans like the Old Town music session or a baseball game are usually fine — just worth glancing at the radar before you head out the door, and bringing a light layer for after dark.
