The rhythmic beat of drums, the vibrant swirl of colorful regalia, and the powerful spirit of celebration will soon fill Albuquerque as the world's most significant Native American cultural event returns to our city. The 2025 Gathering of Nations Powwow is just around the corner, bringing together indigenous peoples from across North America for a spectacular celebration of heritage, tradition, and community.

The Gathering of Nations, held on April 24-26, 2025, at Tingley Coliseum at EXPO New Mexico, is truly a cultural phenomenon, and the most prominent, popular, and legendary Native American event in North America." This incredible cultural celebration attracts tens of thousands of visitors and participants from more than 750 tribes throughout the United States, Canada, and beyond. Whether you're a first-time attendee or a regular visitor, the Gathering of Nations offers an unparalleled opportunity to experience the richness and diversity of Indigenous cultures.

The event showcases Native American culture and pride, competition Indian singing, dancing with over 3,000 dancers, an impressive traders' market, a traditional horse and rider parade, a contemporary music stage, and much more.

The whole family will enjoy the three-day festival's activities and authentic experiences:

  1. Grand Entries and Dance Competitions: The powwow begins with Grand Entries at noon and 7:00 PM on Friday and again at noon and 6:00 PM on Saturday. These spectacular processions feature thousands of dancers in full regalia representing their tribes and dance styles. The following competitions showcase incredible skill and artistry, with over $200,000 in cash prizes at stake.
  2. Miss Indian World Pageant: Beginning with Traditional Presentations on Thursday evening at the Albuquerque Convention Center's Kiva Auditorium, this prestigious competition culminates with the crowning of Miss Indian World on Saturday. Judges evaluate more than beauty by reviewing contestants' knowledge of tribal traditions, cultural presentation, public speaking ability, and more.
  3. Indian Traders Market: Browse and shop from hundreds of vendors selling authentic Native American arts, crafts, jewelry, clothing, and more. Here, you can purchase directly from indigenous artists and craftspeople.
  4. Horse & Rider Regalia Parade: At 4 PM on Friday and Saturday, the Horse & Rider Regalia Parade showcases the deep connection between Native peoples and horses with beautiful displays of traditional riding attire and skills.
  5. Stage 49: This popular venue features contemporary Native musicians performing everything from traditional songs to rock, hip-hop, and other modern genres.
  6. Food Court: Sample conventional and contemporary Native American cuisine, including the beloved frybread in various delicious preparations.

Many consider our rich indigenous heritage to be the heartbeat of Albuquerque. The Gathering of Nations celebrates the Indigenous influence that has shaped Albuquerque's identity for thousands of years.

Native American traditions, history, and arts are deeply woven into Albuquerque's cultural fabric.

Archaeological evidence shows human habitation in the Albuquerque area dating back as far as 12,000 years, with Paleo-Indian cultures leaving traces of their presence throughout the region. Long before European contact, this area was home to thriving Pueblo communities with sophisticated agricultural systems, artistic traditions, and complex social structures.

Did you know New Mexico is home to 23 Indian tribes, including 19 Pueblos, three Apache, and the Navajo Nation? Centuries of challenges have threatened Native beliefs and customs. Nevertheless, many of these beliefs and customs have lived on and organically blended with various cultural influences.

This resilience and cultural continuity are evident throughout Albuquerque, creating a rich multicultural environment that continues to evolve while honoring its roots. From the petroglyphs etched in stone on the West Mesa to the contemporary art, cuisine, and celebrations that make our city unique. Creating a rich multicultural environment that continues to evolve while honoring its roots.

creating a rich multicultural environment that continues to evolve while honoring its roots. Despite demographic changes over the centuries, Albuquerque retains a culture overwhelmingly influenced by the Hispanic and Pueblo (Native American) heritage."

The Gathering of Nations offers families an incredible educational opportunity and is a perfect family outing. The colorful regalia, energetic dancing, and pulsing drum circles will mesmerize children of all ages. More importantly, they'll gain a deeper appreciation for indigenous cultures and the vital role Native Americans have played—and continue to play—in our region's history and identity.

The family-friendly event provides a unique educational experience for children of all ages to learn about and appreciate Native American cultures. Tickets are required for children aged two and above.
