Imagine that you're standing on the field at dawn, hot coffee steaming in your hands, watching over 500 colorful hot air balloons rising over the New Mexico landscape. The silence is broken only by the whoosh of burners and the gasps of wonder from children and adults alike. Get ready to experience pure magic, right here in our backyard!

A festival born from birthday party fun. Here's a fun fact that'll blow your mind: this incredible festival started in 1972 with a modest 13 balloons, and thanks to an eccentric family birthday party, a fortuitous weather pattern known as the "Albuquerque box" and the first successful balloon piloted across the Atlantic Ocean, Albuquerque has hosted the world's largest hot air balloon festival for more than 50 years. What began as Sid Cutter's creative way to celebrate his mother's birthday has evolved into a global phenomenon that attracts people from every corner of the earth.

The numbers are absolutely staggering and make you proud to call Albuquerque home. In 2015, the fiesta logged 955,703 visitors, and the nine-day festival attracted more than 800,000 visitors to watch 500 piloted balloons. Can you imagine that many people coming to celebrate something that happens right in our community? The fiesta is one of Albuquerque's most prominent tourist attractions. It constitutes a significant source of income for the city and local businesses, proving that our little balloon party has become an economic powerhouse, too!

Now let's talk about the crown jewel of the entire festival – the Mass Ascension. A Mass Ascension happens when all 500+ balloons launch from Balloon Fiesta Park. It will take approximately 2 hours for all 500 balloons to ascend. Picture yourself surrounded by families from around the world, all looking up in wonder, as, weather permitting, balloons begin to launch at about 7:00 a.m. on mass ascension days, led by a balloon flying the American flag to the strains of The Star Spangled Banner.

The coordination involved is absolutely incredible! Experienced Launch directors, also known as zebras because of their black-and-white-striped outfits, serve as traffic cops, coordinating the launch and ascent. Hence, balloons leave the field in a safe and coordinated manner. It's like watching the most beautiful, colorful traffic jam you've ever seen, except everyone's floating gracefully into our stunning New Mexico sky!

And here's a statistic that'll make you want to grab your camera: the 2019 Mass Ascension had 524 hot air balloons and is called the "greatest mass hot air balloon ascent" according to Guinness World Records. You could literally be witnessing world record-breaking moments right here in our hometown!

As a long-time Albuquerque real estate expert and nature enthusiast, I've spent countless winter mornings exploring the Rio Grande Nature Center with family, friends, and clients. Our team loves sharing these hidden gems that make Albuquerque a special place to live. Today, we're excited to guide you through one of our city's most magical winter experiences.

There's something extraordinary about magical winter mornings along the Rio Grande bosque. We recommend arriving just before sunrise when the crisp air fills with the distinctive calls of Sandhill Cranes. The Nature Center opens at 8 AM, but we've found that the early birds (pun intended!) get the best viewing opportunities from the parking area beforehand.

This winter season has been particularly spectacular for crane watching. The best viewing times are typically from sunrise until about 10 AM when the cranes leave their roosting areas along the river to feed in nearby fields. We've discovered that the observation deck near the main building offers the perfect vantage point for watching these magnificent birds stretch their wings against the pink morning sky.

The center's central pond, visible through the building's panoramic windows, has become a favorite spot for our team to warm up while watching the wildlife. Here, you might spot winter ducks like Buffleheads and Common Mergansers diving for their breakfast. The volunteers at the front desk will always help you identify any birds you've spotted.

Exploring the trails is a fun winter adventure. The riverside walking trails offer different experiences throughout the day. We particularly love the Bosque Loop Trail, about 1.5 miles of easy walking. In the morning, sometimes we'll see porcupines still asleep in the cottonwoods (our team's favorite game is spotting these well-camouflaged animals). By afternoon, the trail offers chances to see mule deer emerging to browse among the bare branches.

We've learned the importance of proper preparation from showing countless properties in all weather conditions. So, here's what you need to bring along. For the best wildlife-watching experience, we recommend layering your clothing – Albuquerque winter mornings can start chilly but warm up significantly. Don't forget binoculars if you have them, though the Nature Center has some available.

This year, the Nature Center has expanded its special winter programs. We're particularly excited about the new guided bird walk program that takes place every Saturday morning. The new program is a great way to meet other Albuquerque nature lovers, but the best thing about it is that it's perfect for beginners and experienced bird watchers alike. 

As real estate professionals who frequently work with families, we love recommending the Nature Center's family programs. The winter wildlife tracking workshops have become a favorite among our clients with children. There's nothing like learning to spot coyote tracks in the dusty snow or discovering evidence of beaver activity along the riverbank.
