Spring has arrived in Albuquerque and the weather is ideal for outdoor activities. Hiking through the city's trails is a great way to get some exercise and fresh air. The scenic trails around Albuquerque offer a diverse range of volcanic terrain, dirt paths, and a complex trail system that caters to all skill levels. These hiking trails are located in the foothills of the Sandia Mountains and the Cibola National Forest.

Here's a few of the top places to hike in the Albuquerque area:

The Sandia Mountain Foothills

The Sandia Mountains are conveniently located near Albuquerque, offering ample opportunities for outdoor exploration. With 2650 acres of land and numerous trails, visitors can easily immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the area. Here's a complete list of trailhead access points. Some of the trails include the following:

  • Foothills Trail 365
  • Embudito Trail 192
  • Lower La Luz Trail
  • Grassy Hills Loop

The Sandia Mountains / Cibola National Forest

The Cibola National Forest is located on the Eastern face of the Sandia Foothills. It offers a variety of hiking trails suitable for all skill levels of hiker. The trails are clearly marked, making it easy for visitors to navigate and enjoy the beautiful scenery.You can find a full list of trails at fs.usda.gov. Many of these trail-heads are accessible from the Sandia Peak Scenic Byway (Highway 528).

The Rio Grande Bosque Trails

The Rio Grande Bosque Trails provide 16 miles of paved paths within the city, free from roadways. Dirt trails branching off the main path offer a more secluded experience. These trails interconnect with each other, ensuring a unique adventure with every visit.

West Mesa Hiking

The west side of Albuquerque is home to the Native American Petroglyph National Monument, which showcases volcanic features and ancient petroglyphs. The monument boasts an estimated 24,000 images carved into rocks, offering visitors a journey of discovery. From three of the four trails in the area, you can view these ancient drawings and get a grand view of the modern city below.

The Paseo De Las Mesa Trail in Albuquerque provides a stunning panoramic view of the city. The trail spans 4 miles and is paved, making it perfect for hiking. Additionally, there are numerous trails that branch off and intersect with each other, offering a variety of hiking experiences.

West Mesa Aquatic Center

Spacious indoor & outdoor aquatic facility with an Olympic-size pool, waterslides & diving boards. This is an excellent pool for lap swimming, recreational swimming, exercise classes, swim meets (stadium seating to accommodate 800 spectators) and other activities.

Highland Pool

400 Jackson SE, Albuquerque, NM 87108

A 25-meter by 25-yard swimming pool with a 3-meter and 1-meter diving board and an outdoor wading pool. Highland Pool is one of three public pools operated by the City of Albuquerque used in conjunction with Albuquerque Public School events.

Highland Pool is available to school students and athletes, as well as the public.

Los Altos Pool

10100 Lomas NE, Albuquerque, NM 87123

Originally built in the 1950s as an outdoor pool, Los Altos has since been converted as an indoor pool. The main pool's length is 25 meters. Los Altos Pool facility is located near a skate park and softball fields.

Betsy Patterson Pool at Sandia High School

7801 Candelaria NE, Albuquerque, NM 87110

Betsy Patterson Pool At Sandia HS is an indoor 25-yard swimming pool with two 1-meter diving boards. The pool is available to school students and athletes, as well as the public. Due to this arrangement some shift times and dates are subject to change. Please regularly check updated hours.

Valley Pool

A 25-yard swimming pool with two 1-meter diving boards and an outdoor wading pool. Swimming lessons are offered in the fall, spring, and summer at Valley.

Wilson Pool

Wilson Pool is a 25-yard shallow, outdoor pool.

It is early spring and already temperatures are rising here in Albuquerque. No doubt you need to get some fresh air and stretch your legs, and there is no better way to accomplish that than walking or running through some of Albuquerque's beautiful hiking trails. It's much more than good exercise. You'll discover the wonder of volcanic terrain, a trail system suited for all abilities in the foothills of the Sandia Mountains, and trails built on volcanic soil in the Cibola National Forest.

Here's a few of the top places to hike in the Albuquerque area:

The Sandia Mountain Foothills

It's easy to get to the Sandia Mountains from Albuquerque. There are 2650 acres of open space available. These are all the trail access points. Some of the trails include the following:

The Sandia Mountains / Cibola National Forest

West Mesa Hiking

Explore the volcanic features of the west side of Albuquerque that are home to the ancient Petroglyph National Monument. Access the ancient region while also getting a view of the modern city that lies below. It is estimated that 24,000 images were carved into these rocks, so you'll have a vast journey of exploration in the monument area. You can view these drawings from 3 of 4 trails.

With panoramic views of Albuquerque and four miles of paved trails, the Paseo De Las Mesa Trail offers a variety of hiking options, including trails that branch from one another and intersect one another to offer different levels of hiking experience.

Hiking Trails

There are numerous trails throughout Albuquerque that range in difficulty for you and your favorite pup to utilize. Whether you choose a higher degree of difficulty or more of a leisurely stroll, one thing is certain: the views will not disappoint!

Paso del Bosque

  • A Rails-to-Trails sponsored trail that is ideal for walking and running with your dog!

Rinconada Canyon Trail

  • A fairly easy 2 ¼-mile hike within the Petroglyph National Monument. An ideal hike for the entire family.

Petroglyph National Monument

  • The national park has many trails available for dogs and their owners. Being a national park, make sure your dog doesn’t run into snakes and other wildlife and bring them an ample amount of water!

Sandia Crest Trail No. 130S

  • A beginner to intermediate hike along the gorgeous Sandia Mountains. Get to the end and admire the Sandia Crest!

El Morro National Monument

  • You will not be disappointed with the sandstone bluff that are an estimated 200 feet.

Highland Park

  • A quaint park that has ample picnic opportunities and is ideal for families looking to walk around and enjoy the scenery.

Wheeler Peak via Williams Lake Trail

  • This trail is about 8.2-miles and is rated as quite difficult. Located near Taos Ski Valley, dogs and horses are both allowed on the trail.

Williams Lake Trail

  • A local favorite. This moderate 4.2-mile trail runs along the lake and is near Toas Ski Valley. It is recommended for use between May and September.

Remember to keep in mind that all parks and trails require dogs to stay on a leash and be picked up after. Enjoy all of the impending adventures that you and your pup are sure to enjoy all year long!

What better way to spend your time?

Here are some great trails in the Albuquerque area for you to explore.

Sandia Foothills Open Space

The Sandia Foothills Open Space contains approximately 2,650 acres of steep sloped hills intersected by gravelly drainages at the base of the Sandia Mountains. Trailheads provide access to the Foothills trails as well as the Sandia Mountain Wilderness Area, managed by the US Forest Service. Recreational opportunities include hiking, horseback riding and mountain biking. Foothills overview map.

Rinconada Canyon Trail

7601 St Josephs Ave, Albuquerque, NM 87120

Nice, easy 2.2 mile hike (loop) back into a small canyon. The first quarter mile is sand, which is rather unpleasant, but it soon smooths out and the going is much easier. The escarpment and all the petroglyphs are a little ways back from the trail, and roped off. At the furthest point, though, some are right next to the trail.
Take water and sunscreen, look for little lizards and rabbits, and enjoy the trail!

Nice, easy 2.2 mile hike (loop) back into a small canyon. The trail along the base of the north side of the canyon allows you to view a variety of petroglyphs. The escarpment and all the petroglyphs are a little ways back from the trail. At the furthest point, some are right next to the trail. Take water and sunscreen, look for little lizards and rabbits, along with turkey vultures soaring high.

Eye of the Sandias

Eye Of The Sandias Loop Trail is a 6.3 kilometer loop trail located near Albuquerque, New Mexico that offers the chance to see wildlife and is rated as difficult. The trail is primarily used for hiking, running, nature trips, and bird watching and is best used from March until October. The trail leads to a canyon between foothills with trees and shade if you continue going east from the parking area.  Dogs are also welcome on this trail but must be kept on leash.

Boca Negra Canyon

Atrisco Dr NW, Albuquerque, NM 87120

Located off of Unser Boulevard, ¼ mile north of Montaño Road, this canyon provides quick and easy access to three self-guided trails, (Mesa Point, Macaw, and Cliff Base) where you can view approximately 100 petroglyphs.

Piedra Lisa Canyon Trail

13225 Menaul NE, Albuquerque, NM 87111

Piedra Lisa Canyon Trail is a 2 mile out and back trail located near Albuquerque that features beautiful wild flowers and is rated as moderate. 

Michael Emery Trailhead

High Desert St, Albuquerque, NM 87111

Michael M. Emery and Trail 305 Loop is a 3 mile heavily trafficked loop trail located near Albuquerque, New Mexico that features beautiful wild flowers and is good for all skill levels. The trail offers a number of activity options and is accessible year-round. Popular with hikers & mountain bikers, this trail offers rugged scenery, shrubs & diverse wildlife.

One of the many factors that makes Albuquerque such a great place to live is the parks and recreation system here. No matter your interest, you'll find a park suited for your needs, whether it be golfing, swimming, tennis, baseball, and softball, to bicycling and rock climbing. There's nearly 300 parks, along with open spaces, all for your relaxation and enjoyment. Here's a few of the outstanding amenities the parks in Albuquerque has to offer.

City Parks

Los Altos Park | 10300 Lomas Blvd NE

This city park offers plenty of recreation options from an indoor swimming pool to a skate park.

Rio Grande Nature Center State Park | 2901 Candelaria Rd NW

The Rio Grande Nature Center is a 38 acre urban wildlife preserve habitat. The park includes a visitors center, two gardens, several wildlife viewing areas, an education building and a building housing the non-profit Wildlife Rescue, Inc. You can also enjoy four constructed ponds that serve as a habitat for birds and other wildlife.

Mariposa Basin Park | 4900 Kachina St NW

Mariposa Basin Park features 3 walking trail loops around ponds, ideal for bird watchers, along with playgrounds & sports fields.

Open Spaces

Albuquerque maintains over 29,000 acres of open spaces.

Golf

There are 4 public golf courses located in the Albuquerque park system. They all include a well-stocked pro shop with rental clubs, range balls, cart rentals, and golf retail merchandise. Lessons are also available.

The oldest course is Los Altos Golf Course and is ideal for beginning to intermediate golfers and features a banquet and grill. Other courses include Arroyo del Oso, Puerto del Sol, and Ladera.

Recreation Activities

You'll find plenty of recreational activities which include basketball, flag Football, shooting range, softball, tennis, pickle ball, model aircraft flying, along with open space activities such as rock climbing, model rocketry, extreme recreation, and bicycling.

One of the many things that make Albuquerque such a great place to live is certainly the outstanding parks.  Albuquerque Parks & Recreation manages a wide array of parks for the benefit of Albuquerque residents.  You can do so many things such as golfing, swimming, playing with your kids in the playground, walk through stunning open spaces, shoot some targets, ride a hot air balloon, you name it!

If you’re up for a round of golf, there’s four public courses - Los Altos, Arroyo del Oso, Puerto del Sol, and Ladera. All of the courses have amenities such as a pro shop with rental equipment, along with a snack bar or café.

And if you want to go to a park, you have 288 parks to choose from! Of course one of the best parks has to be Balloon Fiesta Park, home of the annual Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta and the Anderson-Abruzzo Albuquerque International Balloon Museum. The park also hosts a wide variety of events throughout the year.

So if you’re looking for an excuse to get out and enjoy the beauty of Albuquerque, you just found almost 300 reasons, so get outside and enjoy this wonderful city!
